The Diamond Synchrotron Laboratory Details :
Diamond is the first third-generation synchrotron light source in the UK , a doughnut shaped super microscope the size of several football fields. Diamond will enable scientists to investigate the structure of matter such as biological tissues, polymers and catalysts at the atomic and molecular level. These studies will help them, for example, to design new medicines and high-tech materials, as well as to investigate environmental issues such as climate change.
* £235 million project with a 97 week programme due for completion early 2007
* Client: Diamond Light Source, Contractor: Costain.
* Concrete manufacturer: Carillion.
* On Site UKAS lab: Eurotest
Eurotest set up and operated a fully UKAS accredited laboratory to support the supply of concrete on this prestigious project. Due to the huge diameter of the structure a high density aggregate was used within the concrete. Barytes aggregate was supplied by Viaton with a density of 3500kg/m 3 allowing a saving of for every 50mm off the wall thickness a reduction in diameter of 2m. The nature of the contract required tight supervision and control. Tony Scott, Costain project director stated recently that ‘'These are the highest tolerances we have ever worked to with concrete. I don't think I will ever come up against anything like this again''.
